Blue Mountain Sydney Three Sisters

The Three Sisters rise 922, 918, and 906 metres above sea level respectively, their weathered sandstone pillars carved by 200 million years of erosion along the escarpment edge. Aboriginal legend ties the formation to three siblings turned to stone, though geologists attribute the towers to differential weathering of harder Hawkesbury sandstone layers. The formation anchors the most visited section of Blue Mountains National Park, drawing over two million annual visitors to Echo Point. Echo Point Lookout delivers the canonical frontal view, positioned 200 metres from the nearest pillar across the valley gap. The platform sits at the terminus of Echo Point Road, with paved access suitable for wheelchairs and strollers extending to all primary viewing decks. A secondary vantage opens from Honeymoon Lookout, 400 metres south along the cliff walk, where the angle shifts to profile the three towers against the Jamison Valley's forested depth. Walking tracks descend from the lookout complex into the valley floor. The Giant Stairway drops 800 steps through sandstone overhangs to the base of the First Sister, continuing via the Federal Pass to Scenic World's valley station two kilometres west. Return via the same route or the Scenic Railway incline requires stamina — the stair climb gains 300 vertical metres without shade. Less demanding options include the 800-metre Prince Henry Cliff Walk linking Echo Point to Katoomba Cascades, which maintains elevation along the escarpment rim. Visibility peaks in winter months when high-pressure systems clear the valley of moisture, though frost and occasional snow can close walking tracks below the rim. Summer afternoons bring eucalyptus haze — the blue tint that names the range — softening distant ridges but reducing rock detail. Sunrise strikes the eastern faces with direct light between May and August, while afternoon sun backlights the formation year-round, creating silhouette conditions favoured by some photographers.
